4 Legalities to Handle After Losing a Loved One

Jan 22, 2020

When you lose a loved one, you don’t always have time to grieve properly until you take care of the legal aspects of the situation. Don’t put these legal matters off. If you do, you are only prolonging the healing. Here are 4 legalities to handle after losing a loved one.

Going over the will

After the death, you need a lawyer to go over the will with you and your family. The will should make it clear who should receive all assets as well as their end of life wishes. In the case of multiple wills, the most recent will is the one that will apply. A lawyer will come in handy if there are any disputes in the family about division of the assets or what to do with the remains.

Inform all employers and financial institutions

If you don’t tell people about the death of your loved one, banks, bill collectors, and employers would not know. Cancel all bills or get them switched to your name. You’ll also need to let the bank know. If the person still worked, you obviously need to tell their employer right away, too. Their employer might have important information for you about benefits that may not apply. Be sure to have multiple copies of the death certificate for anyone that might require it. Don’t forget to cancel magazine and streaming services as well.

Receive life insurance and other benefits

While you hope that insurance companies would work hard to help you during this very difficult time, that’s not always the case. You may require the assistance of a lawyer to receive the benefits that you and other beneficiaries rightfully deserve.

Ensure justice is served

Some deaths can be easily avoided. Sometimes, a patient is neglected. Other times, there is a very serious accident that caused the death. When staff at a hospital or nursing home fails to provide adequate care for your loved one, and it results in death, you and your family deserve compensation for the premature loss. Call a wrongful death attorney about your situation to determine if you have a valid case.

Dealing with the death of a loved one can be the most difficult things you deal with in your entire life. Don’t let the legal aspects of the situation add to your stress. Call a lawyer to help you today.
