4 Ways You Can Shorten Your Jail Sentence

Nov 18, 2019

If you know that you’re faced with jail time, you’ll likely do anything to get out of it. Unfortunately, sometimes you just can’t skip out on serving time. However, here are four things you can do to help shorten your jail sentence.

Look for Alternative Programs

There are various alternative programs that are offered by the state that allows prisoners to get out of jail earlier than their sentence requires. Each state is a little different in their alternative programs offering. For example, states like Pennsylvania and Washington allow sentence reductions if you go to a substance abuse program. Take some time to research the alternative programs in your state and ask for the assistance of your attorney to get started in them.

Good Conduct Time Credit

When you have good behavior throughout your prison sentence, it can do a lot for ensuring that you get a good conduct time credit. The average reduction for good behavior is 50 days per year served. Part of getting this claim through is having witnesses testify at your parole hearing. This way, you have expert witnesses showcasing your good behavior.

Spill the Beans on Another Crime

This one may be something that you want to reserve until last, but you can get your sentence reduced if you spill the beans about another crime. This could be about a crime that happened before you got into jail or one that you’ve heard information about while behind bars. Either way, talk with your attorney and let them set up a meeting with the State.

Apply for Commutation

Commutation is when a leading official legally reduces your sentence. Depending on the crime that you are convicted of, this could be the President of the United States or your local Governor. Be aware that you must have good behavior while you’re in jail for the leading official to even consider reducing your sentence.

Shortening your prison sentence may seem like a difficult task to do. However, if you keep your head on straight and attempt the methods above, you can start the journey towards being released early. There are many options that prisoners have to reduce their sentences or getting out of jail earlier, like finding 24 hour bail bond agents to help you post bail. Not every method works for every type of crime that you may have been convicted of. However, there are some that will help you. Just keep researching and enlist the help of your attorney.
