Accident Aftermath: How to Help Yourself Recover

Mar 9, 2021

If you have been in a car accident, you are frightened, injured, and wondering what may come next. However, if you choose to be proactive, you will be able to help yourself recover not only physically and emotionally, but also financially. Rather than let your accident aftermath impact you and your family even more than it already has, take these steps immediately.

Document Your Accident

From your injuries to getting eyewitness accounts of what happened, do all you can to document your accident. By having as much evidence as possible, you put yourself in a much stronger position to win your case.

Follow Your Doctor’s Orders

After you have received initial treatment for your injuries, always follow your doctor’s orders by continuing to receive follow-up treatment such as physical therapy and keeping appointments with any specialists. By doing so, you make it harder for an insurance company to claim your injuries are not serious.

Consult With an Attorney

Even if you are still in the hospital, you should immediately make plans to consult with an attorney. Since a motor vehicle accident lawyer will usually be willing to visit you in the hospital to discuss your case, you can get started discussing the details of your accident, learn about various legal strategies for your case, and decide how to proceed.

Don’t Take the Quick Settlement

After many car accidents, victims are of course desperate for money to pay medical bills and replace the income lost from being unable to work. If you are in a similar situation, don’t make the mistake of accepting a quick financial settlement from an insurance company. In most cases, the settlements offered by the insurer will be for amounts far less than what could be obtained by letting your lawyer negotiate an out-of-court settlement.

Watch What You Say

Whether it is while you are in the hospital talking to doctors and nurses or after you are at home and decide to update your Facebook page, be careful what you say to others regarding your accident. To your surprise, saying something such as “I’m sorry” can lead others to assume you have admitted the accident was your fault. Unfortunately, if insurance adjusters talk to others and learn of your comments or find certain comments or photos online, you could have a much more difficult time gaining maximum compensation for your injuries.

Though the road ahead will be long and difficult, following these tips will allow you to recover from your accident while still getting the compensation needed for you and your family.
