NBC News reports on its website that the American Lung Association called on the FDA to take “decisive action” to stop underage e-cigarette use in a scathing edition of its annual “State of Tobacco Control” report. The FDA responded with a statement, saying it has “made tremendous progress” and has “ambitious public health goals for 2019.” The FDA continued, “In the last year alone, the agency has advanced work to render cigarettes minimally or nonaddictive, announced historic plans to ban menthol in cigarettes and cigars, and is exploring additional product standards.” It also pointed to a “series of unprecedented actions” it took particularly on the issue of teen e-cigarette use.
South Carolina considers bill blocking local rules on cigarettes, vaping products. Columbia (SC) State reports South Carolina lawmakers “are considering banning cities and counties from setting their own rules governing the sale of cigarettes and vaping products,” adding that “banning local restrictions is supported by tobacco companies and local retailers but opposed by local governments and public-health advocates.” The bill under consideration also “would prevent any local rules governing the flavoring and ingredients in tobacco products, and stop cities or counties from creating their own tobacco-licensing rules.” The bill cleared a House subcommittee and “now goes to the full House Ways and Means Committee for consideration.”
