The New York Times reported consumers will “soon be able to freeze their credit files without charge” to avert identity theft. Free freezes “were required as part of broader financial legislation signed in May by President Trump,” and are already available at Equifax and TransUnion. Experian is set to offer them starting next Friday. However, the Times said “security freezes have not really caught on” with consumers and cited the AARP Fraud Watch Network’s recent survey on digital identity protection, which found that “just 14 percent had frozen their credit files.”
