FDA Holds First Hearing on CBD Safety, Marketing

Jul 31, 2019

The Wall Street Journal reported the FDA on Friday held its first-ever hearing on the safety and marketing of cannabidiol, or CBD, which could lead the agency to allow the substance’s use in certain food products.

Likewise, the New York Times reported on its front page that the “daylong hearing was a first step in what is likely to be a long process to define a legal path to market for CBD products that [the FDA] considers safe.”

The Washington Post reported acting FDA Commissioner Norman “Ned” Sharpless kicked off the hearing with a “list of questions about cannabidiol…which is already being sold in pills, tinctures, skin lotions, sodas and dog food.” Sharpless said, “There are important reasons to generally prohibit putting drugs in the food supply.”

The AP reported speakers at the hearing included researchers, consumer advocates, and dozens of other stakeholders.

CNBC reported the FDA “requested data on how companies develop dosage recommendations for different people and purposes,” as well as data on health benefits and the impacts of CBD on pets.
