Bloomberg News reports the FDA is warning physicians and patients that “some widely used diabetes drugs may, in some rare cases, cause a flesh-eating bacterial infection of the genitals,” called Fournier’s gangrene. The warning applies to the class of SGLT2 inhibitors, specifically, Johnson & Johnson’s Invokana (canagliflozin), AstraZeneca Plc’s Farxiga (dapagliflozin), and Eli Lilly & Co.’s Jardiance (empagliflozin). Twelve patients developed the condition between March 2013 and May 2018, all of whom were hospitalized and had surgery. One person died from the condition.
Reuters reports the FDA has “called for including this risk in the drugs’ labeling.”
