Getting a Ticket: 4 Things Drivers Need to Know

Apr 17, 2019

While no one knows exactly how many tickets are issued every month, most experts agree that traffic violations cost drivers at least $3.75 billion a year. If you have recently received a ticket, then you need to come up with a comprehensive plan to protect your finances. Here are a few tips that will help drivers fight their tickets without breaking the bank.

Never Argue on the Spot

One of the most common mistakes that drivers make is trying to talk their way out of their tickets on the spot. Even if you believe that you are being wrongfully ticketed, almost anything that you say to the officer is going to hurt your case. Some drivers who try to talk their way out of minor tickets accidentally admit to other driving infractions, and that admittance of guilt will probably be caught on tape.

Collect Data

In the heat of the moment, it will be very easy to forget key pieces of information. Immediately after you get the ticket, you should spend a few minutes writing down all of the information that you can remember. That includes where you were driving, what the officer said to you, and any other pertinent details. When it comes time to develop an airtight case, all of those details are going to be incredibly valuable.

Be Courteous in the Courtroom

Standing in front of a judge can be a stressful experience, and it will be very easy to let your emotions take over. Just before you speak in front of the judge, you must take a few big breaths and calm your nerves. At least a few of the people in the courtroom are going to try to prove that you are guilty, and you should make sure that you remain calm and respectful at all times.

Contact an Attorney

Many drivers are surprised to hear that hiring an attorney for a traffic ticket could actually save them money in the long run. A relatively minor ticket can easily cost you thousands of dollars, and getting points on your driving record might affect your finances and insurance rates for years to come. An attorney can provide traffic law assistance to help you develop an airtight case that puts you in the best possible position to beat the charges.

If you did everything in your power to fight your ticket and still lost, then you need to pay the fines and fees right away. Losing a case is always going to be frustrating, but you could face serious legal consequences if you disregard the judge’s ruling.
