How the Elderly Can Guard Against Theft

Jan 13, 2023

As seniors age, they may become more vulnerable to theft and other types of financial exploitation. According to the National Council on Aging, seniors are often targeted by thieves because they may be perceived as more trusting or less able to defend themselves. In addition, seniors may be more likely to have assets that are attractive to thieves, such as jewelry, cash, or valuable collectibles.

There are several steps that seniors can take to guard against theft and financial exploitation. Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Be cautious about giving out personal or financial information: Seniors should be careful about sharing personal or financial information with strangers, whether online or in person. This includes information such as social security numbers, bank account numbers, and credit card numbers.
  2. Secure personal and financial documents: Seniors should keep important documents, such as social security cards, birth certificates, and financial statements, in a safe and secure location. They should also be cautious about who they allow to see or handle these documents.
  3. Use caution when responding to unsolicited phone calls or emails: Seniors should be wary of unsolicited phone calls or emails that request personal or financial information. These could be scams designed to trick seniors into giving away their money or sensitive information.
  4. Set up a trusted network of family and friends: Seniors should identify a trusted network of family and friends who can help them manage their finances and keep an eye out for potential financial exploitation. This can include friends, family members, or professionals such as financial advisors or attorneys.
  5. Consider using a financial power of attorney: A financial power of attorney is a legal document that allows a trusted person to manage a senior’s finances in the event that the senior is unable to do so themselves. This can provide an extra layer of protection against financial exploitation.

By following these steps, seniors can take proactive measures to protect themselves against theft and financial exploitation. It is also important for seniors to speak up if they suspect that they are being targeted or exploited, and to report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
