How to Listen to Your Loved One When They Talk About Nursing Home Problems

May 6, 2021

Having to relocate an infirm family member or an elderly loved one to an environment outside the home is never easy. While adjusting to a new environment can be challenging, actively listening to your loved ones can help to ensure that the process is able to go as smoothly as possible. Poor communication or inaction in the face of a potential problem can prove to be harmful to your loved one.

Selecting the Best Facility

The first and perhaps most important step in ensuring a smooth transition is to select the right facility. From the physical location of the facility to the quality of the staff and the range of services and features that are offered, there are many considerations that need to be weighed carefully before making a decision. Choosing a long-term care option that may not be a good fit can drastically increase the chances that problems may develop, as well as make your loved one feel uncomfortable in their new setting.

Taking an Active Interest

Failing to take a more active interest in the day-to-day activities of your family member can also create complications. Infrequent visits can make effective communication far more difficult, especially when dealing with a loved one who may be suffering from a cognitive disease, neurological issue, or similar medical condition. Failing to hear about a potential problem can make addressing it all but impossible.

Working with the Staff

Building a rapport with the staff can also be very helpful. Getting to know the medical professionals and care providers who will be interacting with your loved one every day can help to ensure their needs are able to be met more easily and effectively. Failing to build a relationship with the nursing home staff can make dealing with a problem or issue far more difficult.

Responding to a Problem

Improper care, neglect and other problems that may arise within a nursing home or long-term care facility are very serious issues. Taking prompt action to address the situation can be of tremendous importance. Speaking directly with the staff, contacting a nursing home neglect lawyer or making alternate arrangements for your family member are all essential concerns should you learn that they are receiving care that is inadequate or improper. If you do decide to pursue legal action in the face of a healthcare concern, make sure to find a lawyer who is trustworthy and reliable. Do some research into how previous cases have gone and consider checking the facility itself to see if other complaints have been lodged. These steps can help you know that your loved one will be legally taken care of in the face of any concerns.

Realizing that you are unable to provide your loved ones with the supervision, care, and assistance they need is never easy. Relocating them to an environment outside the home can also be a challenging undertaking. Listening to your loved ones and taking action to address any problems that may occur will help to ensure that they will receive superior-quality care and the best nursing-home experience possible.
