NPR reports federal prosecutors are arguing that Arizona-based Insys Therapeutics concocted a “complex scheme…to bribe doctors and lie to insurance companies” to advance the sales of a fentanyl-based opioid spray called Subsys, which “can be up to 100 times stronger than morphine.” The medication “is only approved by the Food and Drug Administration for cancer patients who have severe pain despite being on around-the-clock painkillers,” but patients with other conditions were prescribed the drug. Now, in a criminal case against the company, Insys and several executives “are accused of racketeering” to push sales.
