It’s Your Right—How to Get the Amount You Deserve from Social Security

Dec 5, 2019

The social safety net was created for a reason. It’s there to help those in need when they can’t help themselves. This is certainly the case for Social Security disability benefits.

Unfortunately, the government doesn’t always work as well as we would like. In certain cases, people who should be qualified to receive disability benefits from the Social Security Administration may be denied. In other cases, they may receive far less than what they’re entitled to. Thankfully, there are steps you can take to help ensure that you receive the amount you deserve from Social Security.

Collect Evidence of Your Disability

Social Security disability benefits are intended for individuals the government believes have disabilities that prevent them from working. If you have been denied benefits, it may be that the government does not believe you have a disability because you have not supplied adequate evidence of that fact. You need to collect that evidence by going to a doctor that will be able to diagnose your condition and vouch for your inability to work to the government. You will be approved if your diagnosed condition and symptoms are recognized by the SSA as a disability.

Request an Appeal

If you have been denied Social Security disability benefits, always make sure to appeal that decision. Re-applying for benefits instead of appealing a denial is far more difficult. You should also always make sure to appeal within the time frame specified. Missing that deadline can cause you serious problems.

Hire a Lawyer

Having to fight against a huge bureaucracy like the Social Security Administration to get what they owe you can feel like being an ant trying to push a boulder. If you have been having significant trouble obtaining the benefits you believe you are entitled to, you should look for a good lawyer. Social security disability attorney services can leave the more complex and frustrating aspects of dealing with the government to a professional that has experience doing so. Make sure the attorney you choose has a good track record of winning benefits for their clients.

Listen to Your Doctor

One reason certain individuals are denied disability benefits is because they refused to follow the therapy treatment plans prescribed by their doctors for their disabilities. This is always foolhardy. Not only is doing so bad for your health, it may convince the government you are trying to deceive them. Unless you have an excuse the SSA will accept, complete your therapy program and prove that you have done so to the SSA.

Living with a disability can be very difficult. For one, you may no longer have the ability to earn a livable wage. If that’s the case, you should obtain disability benefits from Social Security. However, just because the SSA did not cooperate immediately after you filed your claim does not mean you should give up. Keep trying until you are successful and get legal help if you need it.
