Juul CEO Apologizes to Parents Whose Children Use Company’s Products

Sep 3, 2019

In an NBC Nightly News segment, NBC’s Carl Quintanilla toured a Juul factory in Wisconsin, and asked Juul CEO Kevin Burns, “If we did this tour today with a parent of a teen who had been using or had been addicted [to a Juul product], how would you defend all this?” Burns responded, “First of all, I’d tell them that I’m sorry that their child is using the product. It’s not intended for them. As a parent of a 16-year-old, I’m sorry for them, and I have empathy for them, in terms of what the challenges [are that] they’re going through.”

The Hill reports “Burns added that vaping’s effect on Juul users is still not definitively known, even for minors using the product.” Burns said, “Frankly, we don’t know today. We have not done the long-term, longitudinal clinical testing that we need to do.”

On its website, CNBC reported “former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb and health care advocates blame the surge in teen vaping on Juul.” During his tenure at the FDA, “Gottlieb delayed a key deadline that would have forced e-cigarettes to undergo FDA review by now and could have removed some from the market. He now isn’t sure if he made the right decision.” Gottlieb said, “It’s a good question [whether the delay was a mistake], and it’s a question I get all the time. … And we struggle with it.”
