With more than 2.2 million adults behind bars, the United States has the unfortunate distinction of having by far the highest incarceration rate in the world. Of course, the American prison population is constantly changing as new inmates are sentenced and others are released. Nonetheless, the fact is that it can be extremely difficult for former inmates to readjust to life back on the outside, which helps to explain why so many eventually end up back behind bars. Luckily, getting back to your life after a stint in jail or prison isn’t impossible, and these basic tips should help to make the readjustment period easier and hopefully ensure you never again have to see the inside of a cell.
Focus on Yourself First
When you get out of jail or prison, it is essential that you take some time to focus on yourself and your immediate needs before anything else. Among other things, this could mean getting a place to live and finding a new job. This last factor is extremely important as it will ensure that you’re able to earn your own money. Of course, not all employers will be willing to hire ex-convicts. Still, it is important that you don’t let yourself get down as you can definitely find a job, place to live and whatever else you may need if you’re willing to put in the time and effort.
Find the Support You Need
Having a strong support system can be a huge help in preventing ex-convicts from committing new crimes. In fact, it really doesn’t matter if you join a support group or merely turn to your family and friends for help. What is important is that you have someone to talk to when you encounter problems and someone who can help remind you of the benefits of being on the outside.
Move Forward as Soon as Possible
Another key to getting back to your life is to try to move on as soon as you can. If you’ve just gotten out, it’s important that you immediately change your mindset so you stop thinking like a prisoner. Similarly, even if you were only recently arrested, you’ll still want to try to make these necessary mental changes as soon as possible. Of course, this can be difficult if you’re still stuck behind bars awaiting trial, which is where hiring a company that provides bail bond services can be a huge help by allowing you to move on and hopefully put your past behind you immediately.
Don’t Let Yourself Fall into the Same Old Routine
Keeping yourself from going back to prison usually involves a change in mindset and habits. Essentially, you’ll want to make sure that you make the changes necessary to keep yourself from falling back into your old routine. This could mean avoiding friends and other bad influences or simply trying to adopt a new, healthier lifestyle. Basically, the sooner you are able to make these changes, the better chance you will have of avoiding another term behind bars.
Adjusting back to life on the outside can be extremely challenging. Still, if you’re serious about putting your past behind you, all it takes is a bit of hard work and dedication. Otherwise, you might soon find yourself among the approximately 68 percent of prisoners who find themselves back behind bars within three years of their release.
