CNN reports new research indicates that “one in three young adults is at risk of severe [COVID-19], and smoking plays a big part in that risk.” The study indicate that “32% of the total study population” of 8,000 participants aged 18 to 25 “were medically vulnerable for severe [COVID-19].” However, researchers found that “when the group of participants who smoked cigarettes or e-cigarettes were taken out of the analysis, the medically vulnerable percentage decreased by half, to 16%.” The findings were published Monday in the Journal of Adolescent Health.
The Hill reports, “Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) examined 8,405 respondents to the National Health Interview Survey aged 18 to 25 for the severe COVID-19 risk factors identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.”
The San Francisco Chronicle reports the research indicated that “smoking was the most common risk factor for severe COVID-19 complications among otherwise largely healthy young people.”
