Royal Philips undertook “one of the biggest medical device” recalls “in decades” in June of last year after it found “the foam used to reduce the noise of the motor” in continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines “could disintegrate, releasing debris and chemicals into the air hoses,” the Washington Post reported. The voluntary recall is taking place at an “excruciatingly slow” pace, though, with Philips having “repaired or replaced about 1.7 million of 2.8 million affected devices in the United States and about half of the 5.5 million machines around the world.” This has put “millions of patients” with sleep apnea and other disorders “in the lurch.”
