Seniors More Likely Than Younger Adults to Choke on Dietary Supplements, Have Problems Swallowing Them

Nov 26, 2019

Reuters reports “seniors may be more likely than younger adults to choke on vitamins and dietary supplements, or to have other problems swallowing them, especially when the pills are on the larger side, a new study[published in the Annals of Internal Medicine] suggests.” FDA and CDC “researchers found that more than three-fourths of cases involving swallowing problems were in patients aged 65 and older, according to the study.” FDA spokesperson Lindsay Haake said, “Older adults should be mindful of possible choking or other swallowing problems from taking supplements. … They should avoid taking several pills at once, avoid extra-large pills or capsules, and swallow supplements with plenty of water or other fluid.” Reuters adds that the research team was “led by FDA scientist Dr. Cecile Punzalan.”
