ABC World News Tonight reported that two blood pressure medications have been recalled over potential cancer risk. The segment added, “Both are forms of amlodipine containing too much of an ingredient believed to possibly cause cancer.”
USA Today reported Teva Pharmaceuticals issued the voluntary recall for “all lots of combination tablets featuring the drugs amlodipine and valsartan and another combo drug featuring amlodipine, valsartan, and hydrochlorothiazide.” USA Today explained that the drugs could be contaminated with “N-nitroso-diethylamine (NDEA), which has been classified as a possible human carcinogen, the FDA said.” In an interview last month with USA Today, FDA Commissioner Gottlieb “said the blood pressure drug recalls reflect an increased focus on drug quality to ensure no impurities are present.”
ABC News also covered the story on its website.
Physicians urging patients with high blood pressure to pay attention to recalls.
USA Today reported that physicians are advising patients with high blood pressure to stay updated on the drug recalls involving commonly-prescribed medications. USA Today explains, “Several pharmaceutical companies have announced recalls of versions of valsartan, irbesartan and losartan” because they “could contain an impurity called N-nitroso-diethylamine, a possible human carcinogen, according to the FDA.” Physicians are urging “patients who are currently taking versions of a recalled drug to talk with their pharmacist or physician.”
