We all do regrettable things as teenagers. It’s a time to push boundaries and test authority. However, that doesn’t mean that certain behavior should ever be tolerated. One of the things that should be very unacceptable is stealing. No matter how well you raise your kids, they could make a serious mistake. Here on some tips on how to handle it if your teen gets accused of shoplifting.
Don’t Assume Guilt
You may be angry at your teen. You may also assume that they did it. That does not mean that you need to assume guilt immediately. You should give your teen the benefit of the doubt at first, especially in front of authority figures. You don’t want to do anything to compromise their defense if you decide to fight it later.
Punish Them at Home
They deserve to be punished for their actions. They need to learn that they cannot steal, even from a store. This behavior could get them in much larger trouble later in life when they will be charged as an adult. You need to come up with an effective and harsh punishment for them at home. You might get away with not cleaning any of the house for months. You may even choose to steal some of their favorite things to learn how it feels. You can also embarrass them by having them apologize to the owners of the store they took from. However, as a parent, you probably don’t want your child stuck in the criminal world of court dates and jail. Keep the punishment at home as much as you can.
Don’t Blame Yourself
When a child does something wrong, you may feel a sense of blame yourself. You are the one who raised them. Did you not raise them the right way? Could you have done something differently to cause a different outcome? Stop with these thoughts. Your child’s actions do not necessarily reflect on your skills as a parent. Just handle the situation to the best of your ability.
Get Help
If the store presses charges, you’re going to need help. If your child tries to shoplift something of value, it could even be a serious felony. You will have to seek the services of a felony attorney to help get the best results possible.
Your teen will make mistakes. When they make mistakes, it can get stressful. Follow these tips to help get you through a shoplifting incident with your teen.
